Caring for your pot rose

Caring for your pot rose

Water, compost, nutrients and light are all a rose needs. If you want to go on enjoying your rose for longer than three weeks, all you need to do is prune it. Here are some tips to help you care for your rose.

In brief:

Always stand your rose in a light place. Then water it as needed, feed it once a month, and prune it and give it new compost once a year.

Water | once a week

It goes without saying that your rose will need water. To decide how much water to give and how often, it's important to check the compost regularly. If it feels dry (it doesn't stick to your finger), water the rose. Make sure the water penetrates right down through the roots, but don't allow them to stand in water as they will rot.

Like all plants, the rose needs light to live. In fact, roses are real sun-worshippers! If you place your rose in direct sunlight or near a radiator, it will probably need more water. You can also plant your rose in the garden or grow it in a pot on the balcony. Either way, make sure it gets enough sunlight.

Remove faded flowers (known as dead-heading). This stops rose hips developing and encourages the plant use the nutrients and water to produce more flowers.

Feed | once a month

If you want your rose to keep on flowering, feed it with liquid rose fertiliser once a month. This is available from your local florist or garden centre. Read the directions on the package carefully. Rose fertiliser will also make your plant much stronger and more resistant to damage by pests and diseases.

Prune | once a year

If you have your rose indoors, prune it back after flowering to about 5 cm above the level of the compost, take it out of the pot and plant it out in the garden. After about two months, your rose will start flowering again as a garden rose. As a garden plant, the best time to prune your rose (down to 5 cm above soil level) is in March.

Your rose gets its nutrients from the compost in which it is planted. That's why it is important to replace the compost once a year or at least once every two years. Your florist or garden centre will be happy to advise you as to the best compost to use for roses. New compost will contain plenty of important nutrients that will ensure your plant grows well, remains healthy and produces a sumptuous display of flowers. This way, you can enjoy your Nolina rose even longer.
